Treatment aims to control corrosion, deposits and contaminant carryover into steam. An anomaly can also arise from feedwater, condensate return, deaeration or level control: chemical correction must accompany investigation of the cause. Wilhelmsen: boiler water risks.

Take samples through the specified sample cooler, following the manual and hot-water/pressure precautions. Record the sample point, reference temperature and method; verify calibration and reagents. Conductivity and TDS are related but are not the same quantity: use the method’s conversion without interchanging µS/cm and mg/l. Spirax Sarco: MS1 instructions.

Procedure / How to Complete It

  1. Use only installed-programme parameters, points and frequencies.
  2. Sample and temperature-correct by prescribed method.
  3. Compare trends and ship-specific limits before dosing/blowdown.
  4. Investigate abnormal trends before changing chemistry or blowdown.
  5. Do not add phosphate, alkalinity builder, scavenger or polymer outside the programme.

Practical Example

A conductivity rise is verified with correct sample point/method; the team investigates contamination before using blowdown minutes or dosing from another boiler.

What the PSCO Checks
