Critical classification requires ship-specific reliability measures and regular testing of relevant stand-by arrangements; ISM 10.3 sets no universal intervals or inventories.

Regulatory Reference

ISM Code 10.3: identify systems whose sudden failure may create hazardous situations and provide specific measures to promote reliability.

The PMS covers maintenance of the ship and equipment, not only critical items. ISM 10.1–10.2 calls for procedures consistent with rules and company requirements, inspections at appropriate intervals, reporting non-conformities with possible causes if known, corrective action and records. Paragraph 10.4 integrates checks and reliability measures into routine maintenance. IMO ISM Code, section 10.

For each job retain equipment identification, planned task, due date and actual outcome. Assess and manage overdue work under the SMS and applicable requirements: changing a software date neither proves completion nor authorizes exceeding a statutory deadline. ISM: maintenance records and corrective action.

Equipment identified by risk assessment and SMS; intervals, priorities and spares follow maker, statutory/class, experience and Company.

Procedure / How to Complete It

  1. Identify critical equipment and failure effects.
  2. Define reliability measures, maintenance and testing in the SMS.
  3. Derive intervals and stock from ship-specific sources.
  4. Review after modifications, failures and near misses.

Practical Example

A standby pump is critical: the SMS and maker set its test and spares; the critical label alone creates no interval or minimum stock.
