Operational Energy Efficiency in the Engine Room
Engine-room measures can contribute to CII and SEEMP, but the choice must be demonstrated across the whole energy system: engine load, heat recovery and electrical generation have no universal outcome.
Operational Explanation
While SEEMP Part III and CII rating calculation are addressed at Company and route level in the Environmental Compliance module, the engine room has its own technical levers to contribute concretely to improving the indicator, independent of commercial decisions on speed and route.
Among the most relevant measures: optimizing main engine load within the range of maximum specific efficiency (avoiding both overload and chronic operation at very low loads), the use of waste heat recovery systems for producing steam or electrical power from exhaust gases, the use of the shaft generator to reduce reliance on fuel-fired auxiliary generators while underway, and monitoring engine performance as an indirect indicator of hull and propeller fouling.
Regulatory Reference
MARPOL Annex VI, chapter 4: Regulation 26 addresses the SEEMP and Regulation 28 the annual operational CII for ships within scope. The rules measure and manage performance; they do not universally prescribe waste heat recovery or a shaft generator. Specific measures follow the SEEMP, installed arrangement, maker and technical assessment.

Scope of Application
Ships and ship types within the relevant MARPOL Annex VI provisions. Each measure depends on plant, operating profile, fuels and baseline; the subject also remains useful outside CII where included in the SEEMP or Company energy management.
Procedure / How to Complete It
- Define baseline, metric and comparable conditions.
- Operate engines and auxiliaries within maker limits and recommended ranges.
- Assess waste heat recovery and shaft generation across the total fuel, electrical and thermal balance, including limits and losses.
- Correct trends for load, weather, sea state, draft and other factors before attributing them to fouling.
- Record the measure, conditions, result and decision in the applicable SEEMP/SMS process.
Practical Example
At the same speed through water and under comparable conditions, required shaft power increases. The team checks measurements, draught, trim, weather and propulsion condition; it proposes a hull/propeller inspection if the data support that hypothesis. An increase in engine g/kWh also requires investigation of engine condition and fuel measurement: it does not by itself establish fouling.
