Boiler protections and safety valves are tested only at intervals and by methods, authorisations, personnel and precautions prescribed by maker, PMS/SMS and flag/class; no improvised live lifting test.

Regulatory Reference

SOLAS II-1/26 and II-1/32; approved arrangement, maker instructions and flag/class survey requirements.

SOLAS II-1/32.2 requires oil-fired boilers intended to operate without manual supervision to shut off fuel and alarm on low water level, air supply failure or flame failure. Verify these functions using the authorised method, without bypassing interlocks or creating dangerous conditions. SOLAS II-1/32.2.

Overpressure protection is separate from burner trips: II-1/32.1 specifies at least two safety valves, allowing the Administration to accept one under the stated conditions. Also check feedwater supply and quality under II-1/32 and the manual; record defects and limitations before declaring the boiler available. SOLAS II-1/32.

Scope of Application

Routine crew inspection, PMS functional test and statutory/class survey are distinct activities.

Procedure / How to Complete It

  1. Check condition, alarms and protections under watch/PMS.
  2. Schedule functional/set-pressure tests only by approved method.
  3. Use competent personnel/surveyor and authorisation where prescribed.
  4. Do not lift, gag, adjust or defeat a safety valve as an improvised check.
  5. Record surveys, tests and defects separately.

Practical Example

A live-steam set-pressure test is performed only in an authorised window with required procedure, precautions and personnel; routine watch checks do not replace it.
